Our Design Challenge

COVID-19 has altered billions of lives in a variety of ways.

Given that Coronavirus pandemic has affected how we work, study, shop, and socialize...
...how might we adjust to this situation in ways that will help us stay healthy, proactive, socially engaged, and environmentally friendly?

Empathy Stage

Empathy Stage

In this module, the designers set aside any preconceived notions about the Design Challenge, and take on a "beginner's mindset" as they investigate the challenge from the eyes of the stakeholders.

Empathy Maps and Personas are two tools with a common goal - to fully understand the motivations, concerns, and characteristics of your stakeholder/customer/user. In order to gain full empathy for a problem, these tools can be applied to all stakeholders.

An Interview with Emily Pritchard Carol Howerton

Biomedical Engineer at Mayo Clinic

After listening to expert Dr. Pritchard and watching celebrity interviews, it is clear that America was not prepared for COVID-19 but everyone has addressed the essential need to put aside other problems and address this issue and open up communication to stop this virus.

While COVID-19 continues to spread, researchers and doctors, like Dr. Pritchard, are working vigorously to speed up research and testing for a vaccine for this virus. As most people have seen and as Dr. Pritchard pointed out, there has been an increase in productivity in order to meet the demands of this national crisis. Normal steps taken during research studies are being relaxed and fast tracked to stop COVID-19. She states that this virus’s genome is not huge which should speed up Approve more PCR based tests in order to create diagnostic kits. These kits will help doctors and researchers know how many people in America have been affected by this and to hopefully better understand why and how it spread so quickly.

Celebrities who have been infected are reaching out to fans through social media to encourage them to stay inside and practice social distancing. Former Bachelor Colton Underwood shared with fans on Instagram that he has tested positive for Coronavirus. “…I’m 28 and I consider myself pretty healthy..” Underwood states. Then he goes on, “.. it’s been kicking my ass, just to put it very bluntly..” The former bachelor urges younger people to listen and to stay home.

In early March, many top celebrities during interviews to promote their upcoming films and shows addressed the crisis and showed sensitivity towards how this has and could affect people. These interviews were of course conducted before all the government mandates were made and before people really started to realize how badly the virus was spreading. Some even said they were taking further precautions by wiping things down and limiting fan interaction. However, due to the nature of their jobs, many were still traveling at the time.

I believe what everyone has said about COVID-19 is correct and necessary. It is clear that we all need to step up and do our duty to protect those who could be severely affected. Medical professionals need everyone to take it seriously so they can do their jobs and help people, and people like celebrities are trying to do their part by reaching out to fans and encouraging them to stay safe. Below are links to interviews as well as a link to John Krasinski’s new show, Some Good News, to help keep people's spirits up during this time.

People need to stay home and “influencers” are being asked to promote this in order to reach young demographics who do not watch the news or fully consume news

Everyday people are posting pets, selfies from home, pictures of nature, throwbacks to happier times and positive messages to uplift themselves and others

Many lifestyle influencers are providing “pantry staple” recipes to help people utilize the resources they have in their

Testing Feedback

Tester 1: Loved the site found it especially helpful for workouts that can be done at home. This tester was concerned about the variety of skill levels though, so we created a screen where people can choose their skill levels to make it more inclusive of different types of people. Overall, this tester liked the site a lot.

Tester 2: This user liked the online shopping feature of the site. However, they were a bit confused as to whether or not these were "editor's picks" or more of a paid promotion. Based on this feedback, we have decided to disclose that these slots are available for purchase by the retailers, so that our users know that the site is not perfectly neutral when it comes to featured products. This user also liked the mission of keeping people together during this time of social distancing through the use of the internet.

Tester 3: This user liked the workout component and had the same feedback about the skill level variety as User 1. This user also liked the cool color palette, and recommended that the advertisements and stock photos continue to reinforce this color scheme for best-quality branding. This tester is a graphic design student and really liked the website, especially since it was created quickly as a prototype.

Our Learning Process

  • Branding is something people really respond to. Solid branding and a clean color scheme makes the website engaging and fun to use. Since people are so isolated and disconnected as a result of the quarantine, this is more important than ever. Colors are about more than how they look; they also make people feel something.

  • People are super conscious in today's age about relationships between platforms and brands. FTC guidelines are well known by consumers due to influencer culture and the dominant role youtube plays in media consumption. People trust a brand that is quick to reveal biases, and this is important for us as a new brand to earn customer trust.

  • Prototyping is a good way to get feedback. There is no feedback that is more valuable than that of someone who uses the product and can truly know what the experience of a customer is. We used friends who would give us honest feedback on the product based on their relevant experiences with topics such as graphic design.

Prototype Refinement

In response to users 1 and 3 we decided to add the section where users can choose their skill level before they choose the type of workout that they do. In response to user 3, we continued in the direction we were already going, and continued to make conscious choices that reflected our brand. In response to user 2, we decided to disclose our affiliation with these brands in order to be more transparent to our users.
